The Chacapa

I've been wanting to ask this question for a while. I attended ayahausca ceremonies with don Jose Campos in March of 2008. He used what I believe to be a traditional rattle made of dried leaves called a chacapa. At one point during the ceremony, Don Jose walked around the lodge rattling the chacapa and singing his icaro. As he came to each person, he fanned them with the chacapa and bopped them on the head with it a few times. There seemed to be a fantastic aroma coming from the chacapa, that seemed to deepen the visions incredibly! My question is does this aroma come naturally from the leaves in the chacapa, or is something added to it to create this amazing smell? What kind of leaves are chacapas made from? I'd be interested in hearing of other experiences with the chacapa.

Nice input' from you both' thank you'
I was going to say Florida water' it clears the psychi and enhances visions'
Canfer brings clear white light' both re-energies the aura and the light body'
      and ground negative energies'
Both are used for protections and cleansings'

Many herbs are used for different situations' mostly made personalyby each particular curandero'
Get a bottle of Florida water and experiment with concotions of different herbs' grind the herbs and submerse them in florida water'
you can also use a good vodka' do some study of what each herb is used for'
This is an excelent way of getting aquainted with the essence of each herb and mixtures'

      Blessings

I am very familiar with florida water, and this smell doesn't match my memory of what the chacapa smelled like. Canfer (camphor) is a definitely a possibility though. Thanks and Johan and Nobuoni!
