people who really still take ayahuasca seriously, in a spiritual context... Isn't there? I understand time is money and some compensation is do, but even any old men asking $20-50 a drink.... No offense, but even in the USA, thats pushin' real expensive for one dose.
I am very anxious to see how things go with a longer set up than a few weeks. I need a little help with all this, and I'm getting it piece by piece so far, but this Fall I'll come to live in Iquitos, pretty much to stay as long as I can. I plan to explore and discover, and see new people and try new things. Entheogens have always been close to me, and by going here, I'm going I am getting closer to them. I want to learn from Ayahuasca of course, and likely the most, but San Pedro, and the Mushrooms that grow there as well... Once im there Ill find a more long-term residence (hopefully), and explore my options when it come so ayahuasqueros. I'll try many, and i've got a pretty decent list so far, some options much more financially doable when it comes to a long-term trip.
Sigh...if only the rain could come sooner...

Re: The must be some...
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 4:31 AMsometiimes you can work for healing and knowledge, i have heard that some people have worked in the fields of an ayahuascero for ceremonies and knowledge of plants. 20 dollars for a ceremony is a friendly gringo price, if your really out of money and have true dedication and can convince someone you do not have money ( difficult when you are standing there in clothes that would cost a few months salary, laptops , cameras ) you can do it on an exchange basis or free. also as you say if yiou stay for a long time lots of things start opening up. you can ask to become an apprentice, which some curanderos will go for if they are interested in gringos for some reason, it is all you and your attitude! enjoy your viaje! oh thats another thing if you dont speak spanish learn fast! -

Thu, May 8, 2008 - 2:45 PM"old men asking $20-50 a drink.... No offense, but even in the USA, thats pushin' real expensive for one dose. "
That's cheap in my opinion, if i were an old man and had studied something for 30-50 years and someone wanted to pay me $20-$50 for several hours of my time, I'd probably laugh at them, unless they were truly poor, which many are not.
I think one would be more justified in complaining to the airline company about how much they rape thee in airfare.
Are there people that don't consider a cermony "a dose", for crying out loud go buy a freaking hit of acid! In the U.S.,the material for a dose probably cost more than $20 for shipping, not to mention the hours of preperation. No offense, but do your self a favor and leave the bargain seeking consumeristic programming at the luggage check in at Lima.

Re: The must be some...
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 3:53 PMYeah, it's pricey when you plan on staying for a long time and have people charging you that much for something they would charge a local about $6 for. And some of the guys charging $50 are charging 1/5 of what the average peruvian makes in a month...not bad for an evenings "work".
I can't bargain with the airlines (unless I got to Priceline dot com), but bargaining IS something acceptable in latin countries, and asian, and other european and african.
I'll probably take my time finding the people who are serious about what they do. That'll be a hard thing to do, maybe, with how capitalism has infiltrated religion pretty much anywhere it goes...but it'll also be easier with the longer period I plan on staying
Pardon my bad term of "dose", but when getting most other entheogens you don't pay for ceremonies (with exceptions), and I was trying to relate the cost. But the $20-$50 range is about what someone might pay MAX (except for some) for a single dose, of pretty much anything.
Also, If I wanted to buy the products and make it here, Ive looked and even here the ammount I could get for between $25-$55 (depending on if its a traditional batch or an analogue) I could get enough material to make enough for anywhere from 6 to a dozens people. However, doing it here isnt something I really wanna entertain anymore. -

Re: The must be some...
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 5:22 AM50 dollars for a ceremony? That's an excellent price considering that the curandero has spent thousands of dollars buying his property where he has built a ceremonial maloca, cabins, toilets and showers, kitchen, landscaping, hired help that looks after the people coming, etc...
yes, you can find it for 5 dollars too. when you do, post the difference. we'd love to hear your remarks.
This issue has been written about over and over and over.... Eric, you even say you can buy the materia a bit cheaper than 50 dollars... but that doesn't include the knowledge of how to prepare it, the work that the curandero goes thru to cook the medicina, the hours singing to it and blessing it, the flower baths you get before hand, the hammock you are resting in as he prepares the space, the ceremony itself and the cleansings you receive, the icaros sung, etc etc. etc. etc etc.

Re: The must be some...
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 6:18 PMThat's simple Veg!
Just like that American Express or mastercard commercial;
Computer to type how much you hate over paying impoverished indians for their work:
$1900
Airline ticket to Peru:
$900
Slick camera and camcorder to film the adventure:
$1200
The gifts offered by the medicine:
Priceless
Some things money can't buy, for every thing else, there's a credit card.

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 9:54 PMi would liike to add the old cliche, you get what you pay for....
five dollar enlightenment is probably the same as thousand dollar enlightenment, but there is always the risk of giving 5 bucks to the wisest of people, a true master.
