Buy a book and make an analog. Have a responsible and sober friend look after you while you travel. It's not about traveling in the United States, but about traveling in the inner states. -

Take your time and learn
Sun, November 8, 2009 - 7:11 PMOr go to the Ayahuasca forums at www.forums.ayahuasca.com and do research on making Ayahuasca and, more important, developing a relationship with Ayahuasca.
Start with www.forums.ayahuasca.com/phpbb...ic.php including reading all the links. Take your time and learn.
The churches are not really there as a handy way for people to experience Ayahuasca (any more than the Catholic church is there as a handy way for people to experience wine). They are actual religions. If you are really interested in them, you could start learning about them at www.forums.ayahuasca.com/phpbb...um.php -

I personally think your original idea about seeking out the UDV /Santo Daime is a good one. Having a group of experienced and supportive individuals surrounding you for your first voyage is an ideal situation. Not to mention you know that the batch you get will be an effective one.
Let us know how it turns out, -

Mon, November 9, 2009 - 10:22 AMI agree with both Ryan and Gayle. I was a bit turned off at first by your sort of uninformed approach, but if you do some research as Gayle suggested and then you approach UDV/Santo Daime you will sound more informed. -

Approaching the churches
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 11:03 AMYes, if you want to approach the churches, then do some research. If you were to approach the Catholic church knowing nothing else than the fact that they drink wine, and you want to experience the wine, they would probably say "come on in" because they want to convert people no matter what. But the Ayahuasca churches are different -- they do not proselytize and they do not see themselves as merely functioning as a way for people to experience Ayahuasca. The Santo Daime welcomes people who are sincerely called to them, but they screen people and will discourage you from coming if you are just interested in the Ayahuasca and nothing else -- and they know from experience that people who are just looking for an Ayahuasca experience don't care for the Santo Daime works, which are highly ritualized and which are about deep prayer.
But if you are interested, then besides the page I linked to above, www.forums.ayahuasca.com/phpbb...um.php , where you could ask questions as you research, the Daime churches I know of ask that before requesting to come you at the minimum read the preface (by Jonathan Goldman) to Alex Polari's book "Forest of Visions." But that is the bare minimum. There are a lot of resources about Santo Daime on the web, including a lot of Youtube videos of Daime works. This thread www.forums.ayahuasca.com/phpbb...ic.php has a lot of good videos that can give a little bit of the flavor of Santo Daime.
It is much harder to get an invitation to the UdV, btw, than to Santo Daime. Plus, one difference between UdV and Santo Daime is that UdV requires spiritual monogamy of its members -- you can't drink Ayahuasca in any other venue if you are a member, and practicing other spiritual paths in addition to UdV is not welcomed, and taking other entheogens is forbidden. Members can be expelled from UdV for smoking pot (on their own time).
Whereas the Santo Daime is eclectic, sees all good spirits and good practices as being on the same side, and does not in any way restrict or discourage members from practicing other spiritualities in addition to Santo Daime, or from drinking Ayahuasca in other venues, or from taking other entheogens. Their very name is the Eclectic Center of the Universal Flowing Light -- Eclectic and Universal are in their very name. But *within* their own works, rules and procedures are strict because they create a containment field for a very strong collective energy. -

Re: Approaching the churches
Thu, November 12, 2009 - 3:29 PMThanks Gayle - like the forceful power of the winds you are named after - your replies really shed light - I am deeply appreciative and awed by your reaching out to someone whose initial yearnings showed up in such an inarticulate gush of pleading - the days came and went a few years ago when all i had to do was ask - and I hesitated and said to myself "when I am really ready" - now - a few short years later - but in a very different social mileau - I am reaching out with a computer and found it at first a struggle - thank you again for sharing so much of great value - thank you.

Re: Wow! 1st time help dearly appreciated - let er riipp!
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 7:08 PMI agree with the others. I spent almost a month researching, mixing, testing, and failing at various concoctions. In the end, the brew allowed me access when I was ready -- at exactly the right time. Spend the time, do the homework, and thou shalt be rewarded.
The church provides nothing more than a supportive structure -- something unnecessary IMO.
Good luck on your travels...

Re: Wow! 1st time help dearly appreciated - let er riipp!
Thu, November 12, 2009 - 3:36 PMI am encouraged by your valiant efforts and want to thank you Kenneth for sharing those inspiring words with me - as a person with a reputation for dismissing structures - I long for structure with "this" - just as I long for a helping hand in contacting those "structures" devoted to this work - thanks again - really!
