In lak'ech AHO!
I'm looking for some guidelines in the preperation for my first ayahuasca ceremony.
My friend Mirko Fernando Sanchez, an Incan Indian living in poland since 27 odd years, is bringing Curendero Don Raul www.mirko.org.pl/donraulen.html
to Poland for the second time. It has been quite synchronic for me as I was looking to do a ayahuasca analog in germany 2 months ago, but it didn´t happen, and then a couple days later I heard about Don Raul coming. Om tat sat :)
So the ceremony is in Poland in just over 2 weeks. I am looking for some concrete guidelines as to a diet i could go on and eventually a fast. I have already done some good work the past 3 weeks in this direction - doing raw food for many days, lots of yoga everyday, traveling on my bicycle so good soultime :)
I'm an iboga initiate and relatively experienced in psychoactive plants and substances. I self healed hepititis B and C during my second iboga experience so many profound experiences.
My intention for this ayahuasca ritual is naturally manifold, but my main focus is to ask the spirit of the plant to help me develop a more intimate and connected and lasting relationship with the plant kingdom. U know to get to know on a deeper level the properties of plants, their spirits, healing qualities and applications. I have a bit of a block towards plants i've noticed. I feel a bit overwhelmed when i realize how many plant species there are and find that it is difficult for me to remember/integrate any knowledge i pick up along the way about plants that i come into contact with.
Also would like the aya to help me build a more centred and balanced perception of reality, well more for it to help me keep my centre and balance in my perception of reality :) Some deeper grounding generally as i can often fly a bit high, which i do enjoy, but there are many everyday situations in which i feel that I should be more grounded.
So boom, I think i have a good approach already to this ceremony, and it is very sincere and i feel the timing and synchronicites are perfect, but of course i am very open to more input and advice from u wonderful creatures :)
How long should i fast for before the actual ceremony?
What diet could i implement leading up to the ceremony and before the fast? I am a vegan, but would like to know if there is a good cleansing diet that would work for the ceremony.
How do you "ask" ayahuasca for help and blessings? I already have the intention deep in my heart since some weeks and I defiantely have a great respect and revenrence for the shamanic plant mixture but i am interested to know how people present there desire across to the spirit. eg. do u tell the curandero what u r seeking and then drink, or just keep the awareness of what u r seeking and drink, etc.
Many blessings and tnx ahead!
peace unbound!

Re: First Ayahuasca Ceremony
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 7:23 AMYou don't have to actually fast, unless you feel guided to do that (and this is a situation in which to be attuned to your own guidance). There is a practice called "dieta" in Spanish (sasina in Amazonian Quechua) taught by Ayahuasca, which sensitizes you to her (and in fact can be and is used to sensitize to any Plant spirit).
Here are some threads on dieta:
www.forums.ayahuasca.com/phpbb...ic.php
www.forums.ayahuasca.com/phpbb...ic.php
Note that dieta is not just about food (basically, tasteless food) but also includes abstaining from sexual stimulation and unnecessary social interaction, and, in this modern world, from most mass media like television and radio.
There is no set number of days for dieta, it is just considered that the longer you do it, the more effective. Dieta is done after the ceremony too, especially if you receive healing, because the healing effects continue to work on you in a subtle way for as long as dieta is continued.
"my main focus is to ask the spirit of the plant to help me develop a more intimate and connected and lasting relationship with the plant kingdom. U know to get to know on a deeper level the properties of plants, their spirits, healing qualities and applications."
This is definitely something Aya can help you with! One of her primary purposes is to teach humans and plants how to better communicate with each other and work together. She is a translator and mediator between the Human world and the Plant world. She can help us to understand Plants and deepen our relationship and understanding of Plants. (As I mentioned above, dieta is a practice taught to the Human world by Aya for helping us communicate with ANY kind of Plant spirit, not only Aya.) Here is a thread about Aya and Plant spirits:

Re: First Ayahuasca Ceremony
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 4:28 PMtnx for that inspiring and informative reply gayle.
The information and experiences in the links u posted really resonate with my intuition and i feel that my intent is truly guiding me already.
I approached iboga in a very intuitive way too. i didn´t have the opportunity to have a full bwiti ceremony and initiation, but i did my research and tried as best i could integrate the information and experiences and the knowledge of the bwiti cult into my preparation - kept a sincere and humble approach, a kind of surrendering to my higher self and letting that aspect commune with the iboga spirit - and it was quite perfect, not totally what i had expected, but perfect :)
I´ve come to see plants as having a fully unified consciousness on a "higher" dimensional level. Physical plant bodies being like the receptors and transmitters in material dimension. I hope ayahuasca can help me integrate this knowledge so i can use and practice it.

Re: First Ayahuasca Ceremony
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 5:07 PMGayle said it all. I might add it's better not to have big expectations. Ayahuasca, unlike Iboga, is not a one-off experience, but more of a path; you may not see impressive results from you first few ceremonies and that's perfectly okay.
Good luck in your endeavor!

Re: First Ayahuasca Ceremony
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 9:10 PMI prepared without knowing when or how aya would come into my life and also experienced some amazing synchronicities. I'm happy for you, Afghan! The only thing I would add to Gayle's post is that, unless you really feel guided to fast, it's probably best not to do so. I was glad that others advised me not to fast. You will need your strength. It can be strenuous work. Good adventures to you!

Thu, August 6, 2009 - 2:42 AM> How long should i fast for before the actual ceremony?
I fast for 6-8 hours to have an empty stomach, but that's not a strict fast really as I eat fruits and drink smoothies throughout the day. -

Re: First Ayahuasca Ceremony
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 2:19 AMCze Dzikusie! Of course i have some expectations - i think it´s really natural to have them, but am not attached to them :) Sure i would love to have a full blown communion with the lady of the forest, but with iboga i too wanted to have bwiti directly speak to me, but it wasn´t like that, but perfect in the way that it was - it gave me the healing i really needed, both times.
So the diet is not a "strict" aspect in the ayahuasca ceremony? I am compeled to cleanse myself naturally, although i did get pretty drunk yesterday with my friends - it´s ok eh :) I going in the next days to a lake in poland where i will go "in" and put things together for the ceremony. I'm also going to do a Temazcal sweat lodge the night before the ceremony, with my Incan friend, mirko - the organiser of the aya ceremony. I watched in a documentary (jungle trip) that they use stinging nettle on there bodies during the one ceremony - is this common in traditional aya ceremonies? It does does purge a lot of toxins, drunk, eaten or beaten on the body.
Tnx madeleine for ur words and happines for me :) Beautiful adventures 2 u 2! AHO! -

Re: First Ayahuasca Ceremony
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 6:46 PM"So the diet is not a "strict" aspect in the ayahuasca ceremony?"
All my reading tells me that, at least in traditional circles, some version of the diet IS strictly adhered to, and I assume it's for very good reason. Read especially about tyramine and MAOIs; there are some specific foods to be avoided in order to prevent severe discomfort and the possibility of hypertensive crisis...although I've also read some opinions that the type of MAOI in caapi doesn't present this problem. Here's a thread about that, with interesting opinions about whether to follow a special diet or not: ayahuasca.tribe.net/thread/d...cf3959ec0
In my very limited experience, it has seemed that those who follow the diet have an easier time (physically) than those who do not. Personally, I subscribe to the idea that not only does it help to purify the body, but heightens one's sensitivity due to the lack of stimulation. Also (perhaps especially), making the effort to adhere to a strict diet can serve to keep one mindful of one's intention in the time leading up to ceremony.
I've had a healthy breakfast and a very light lunch on the day of my ceremonies.
"I going in the next days to a lake in poland where i will go "in" and put things together for the ceremony."
Great! Although so far I haven't been able to get away like that, I've done a media and communications fast for at least a week prior to ceremony: no radio, music, newspapers, telephone, email, tribe, idle gossip... didn't want the sturm und drang of the world rattling around cluttering up my psyche when I approached the medicine. Some may think this extra effort is a bit extreme but I like it.

Sat, August 8, 2009 - 6:35 AMmadeliene boom!
reading the dieta thread prior to ayahuasca and it´s great to see that all the sistars and brothers writing more or less what is coming through to me intuitively as i approach this plant :)
I think that 90% of this dieta, that i´m now learning about, is about the intention :) of course it purifies the body, but surely more important in this whole process is the mental attunment to ones journey towards, and with consciousness, a plant spirit.

read u on that one dear being :)
gossip is black magick in manifest, the cybersphere - telepathy disrupted....
i´m gonna swim in the lake of self for the next 2 weeks, eating and drinking simple. My partner is at this lake and she is reflecting to join me on this ayahuasca communion. This will help in the celebacy :) I have been for 4 weeks already ;) AHO!

Re: First Ayahuasca Ceremony
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 9:16 AM"So the diet is not a "strict" aspect in the ayahuasca ceremony?"
The spiritual dieta is not a "strict" aspect, in the sense that it is not "required," but it helps to sensitize you to the Aya spirit, helps to deepen your work with Aya and helps to make Aya healing more effective. The healing work of Aya can continue =after= the ceremony for as many days as you continue to follow the spiritual dieta. And there are degrees of strictness with the dieta, depending on what you are guided to do at a given time. (It is not a fast, unless you feel guided to fast.) As Dzikus points out, Aya is not a one-off like Iboga, but a long-term relationship or path.
The MAOI safety diet, mentioned by Madeline, is a completely separate issue from the spiritual dieta (which is why many of us use "dieta" rather than "diet" for the latter, to keep them distinguished). As Madeline suggests to read up on tyramines and food interactions, here is a thread on that:

Re: First Ayahuasca Ceremony
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 11:06 PMi went to a ceremony in ecuador in which we drank san pedro and stayed up all night, and then in the morning we were bathed in a nice warm herbal bath and then beaten with stinging nettles as the last thing before being dumped in the back of a pickup truck and driven back to quito. I kind of liked the stinging feeling. the ceremony was run by an austrian man and his ecuadorian wife. not sure how "authentic" this treatment was; i did not experience it elsewhere.
