hi,

i was wondering if anyone knows what kind of situations there may be available in the amazon to apprentice in shamanic healing or vegetalismo. specifically, i am wondering if there are organizations that might trade apprenticeship and basic food and shelter for my work.

in my case, i am an acupuncturist and chinese herbalist. since some organizations are aimed toward treatment of diseases (like addiction) or more general somato-emotional healing, i think that an acupuncturist might be a helpful support to such a healing center. of course i feel it would be a wonderful experience for me to learn shamanic healing while helping others, and i am at a period in my life where i may just be able to go live in the jungle for a few years... nothing keeping me here at the moment, so i figure it is best to look into these opportunities while that is still the case...

peace and gratitude,

matt

    Hi Matt,

I think that the great majority of curanderos and such don´t have an online presence so the best way to find an opportunity is pick the general location where you want to be then go there and start beating the bushes. Make sure your Spanish is passably fluent and maybe download one of the Quechua and Shipibo dictionaries from other threads on this tribe. I think your healing skills will be helpful as you learn the medicine, especially as you advance and take on the responsibility of helping heal others in the ceremonies.

As far as working in trade, I think it more likely that you will be donating both in the ceremonies and donating money to the cause as well. Depending on how content you can be with a simple lifestyle the cost of living in the Amazon can be really inexpensive. I had an apartment in the city and a motorcycle and ate at ´tourist´ restaurants often and I didn´t spend more than $300 a month, and I had friends who were living away from population centers who spent much, much less.

    Good luck :)

I am finally attempting to go directly towards participation in ceremony. I have many years of peripheral interest and LONGING....

I am most impressed with your reply to Matt and I am encouraged by your description to challenge my travel assumption --(that I was only available for US travel...). (I may have difficulty with VISA's that other people do not have....?or may NOT)
my question to you directly and to anyone reading - indirectly is would you consider a response to this question; How can I contact people in USA - NM or OR /UDV or whomever else might know - about my commitment to participating this Febuary - I have tried searching online - quite creatively and these posts just now to tribe.net is the best I have come up with so far

I dearly appreciate any guidance at all

      thank you so much
