Cottonwood has not yet reached the point at which we will pass the test for public non-profit status, which comes up in another 3 years. Non-profits have 5 years in which to show they are publically supported, rather than supported by a small handful of donors. There are advantages to maintaining public status, which we will only do if more donors contribute more low- and medium-level donations.

Could you please give me a statutory cite for this five-year process, as well as a definition of a public non-profit? I am definitely not a tax lawyer. :-)
Thanks for your help.

The cite you gave outlines the usual requirements for a 501(c)(3) tax exemption. What I am puzzled about is your reference to a public non-profit status, which requires small donations from many people. I was not aware of this status before, and I would like to learn more about it.
I have served on the board of a number of non-profits over the years, from small start-ups -- a rape crisis hotline, a program providing outdoor adventures for inner-city youth -- to humongous civil rights organizations, and I can't recall having run across this distinction before. I would be grateful for more information.

Mon, August 17, 2009 - 8:41 PMSteve, No good answer for you on this one. You'll have to consult a tax attorney. Like you, I'm not a lawyer. Sorry for my ignorance.

Re: Cottonwood Research Foundation NEEDS YOUR HELP!!
Sun, August 16, 2009 - 12:59 PMI should also mention we need help importing articles (published and unpublished) into our digital library. This library could possibly break open the doors to public understanding of these tools. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of research articles waiting to be imported into the system. If you can't help financially, but can donate some time, please contact me. Thanks.
