"Benny Shanon is known for his controversial theory that the patriarch Moses was under the influence of hallucinogens when he received the law. Specifically, he believes that a psychedelic cocktail similar to ayahuasca may explain Moses's vision of the burning bush: "In advanced forms of ayahuasca inebriation, the seeing of light is accompanied by profound religious and spiritual feelings". I don't believe all spiritual experience can be myth-busted to someone's trip. St. Peter the gate keeper to Heaven? While I firmly believe that visionay plants and fungi were used hand in hand to attain spiritual experience, I don't believe every spiritual experience can be convniently packaged and explained away this easily. The whole "Christ was just a mushroom" stuff seems to undermine the content and complexity of history, but I do think entheogen use in religion has been unfairly censored by those who are afraid of it.
