Aya and Breast-Feeding

Hey folks, I've got a friend who would like to drink aya with us, but is currently breast-feeding. Obviously my first reaction is no, don't recommend it at all, at least not so long as there is any doubt whatsoever about the chemical processes and how they may affect lactation. But I was wondering if anyone has any concrete scientific facts they would like to share, preferrably with reliable links, saying yay or nay on the matter.

I'm guessing the Chacruna wouldn't really be a big deal as the dmt processes so quickly through our body. But the vine itself, the MAOi? I really don't know that much about it chemically.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Jav

I don't know as much about Peruvian traditions and breast-feeding, but in the Brazilian churches, many women actually breastfeed during ceremonies in a space separate from the main ritual. I've even encountered women extracting breastmilk to be given to their babies later, because it is healing.

This isn't very scientific, but I've witnessed it for years in the tradition, and all the babies (and their mothers) seem to be glowing and healthy.

Thanks Kristen, I can definitely see how that would be a possibility too, that the sheer energy charge of it could have really positive effects. But a lot of women who aren't really quite as dedicated to it as some others are (reasonably so maybe....) would be pretty reluctant to try that out.

      :)

The Indians don't consider it a problem, in my experience.

Gayle, have you encountered this in ceremony in your time?

The reason I ask the original question also is because I confess my ignorance when it comes to understanding the process via which toxins or substances of any sort pass from ingestion to breast milk. I've heard that alcohol can pass through breast milk (least, I think I have), and though I realize we're talking about a totally different spirit, nonetheless, I'm just curious how or if rather, these chemicals would pass from ingestion to milk.

" Gayle, have you encountered this in ceremony in your time? "

I should rephrase this question to: Have you seen women breast-feed during ceremony, and if not, have you noticed that they wait any given amount of days or time after the ceremony before breast feeding again? or Are there any taboos or restrictions that you know of related to this, or anything like that?

Thanks in advance again, I just want to make sure that if I pass information on that I understand it and research it well first.

            Hi Jav,

These are really good questions - and I don't doubt the importance of having the knowledge to make an empowered decision. I do know that pregnant women tend to drink less than others, since they are already at a heightened sensitivity. I'll write to some of my friends in the South and see if I can find a clearer answer for you.
